S&D Wins Presidential Environmental Awards

The Presidential Environmental Awards, organized by the Central Environmental Authority is the country’s main environmental award of the year, which recognizes, industries with advanced environmental practices and development & adoption of novel strategies. Being a part of the “Sri Lanka Next- A Blue Green Era” nation-wide campaign, National Green Awards encourages businesses to go beyond compliances influencing industrialists to protect the environment.

S & D Chemicals Pvt Ltd was adjudged the second best performer in the category of Chemical Products under the industrial sector and was awarded the Bronze Award as no candidate was selected for the Gold Award.

To be the Presidential Environmental Awards recipients, the applicants have to fulfill every aspect of the environment, health and safety standards evaluated by the selection committee. The evaluation process considers the extent to which the company is able to successfully manage the environment, health & safety procedures, the company’s contribution towards a sustainable production process and its success in meeting the demands of consumers.

Our production process runs on the basis of ‘Life Cycle Thinking’ and the 3R Concept including the practical aspects of the terms Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We are on the way forward to reduce our carbon foot print and to be the first carbon neutral company of the sector by 2025. The company has already facilitated with solar energy based electricity. We put our maximum effort to reduce the energy consumption in our production process.

We initiate the production process only after running a proper risk assessment which involves a thorough investigation of every possible accident that may occur during the production process and be prepared to implement possible alternatives or management strategies. Our analytical laboratories use the world’s most sophisticated equipment such as Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Spectrophotometers, etc.

Further, we use UV disinfection and high-tech membrane technologies such as Reverse Osmosis to treat water that is used in the production process. Also, we follow strict regulations and standards in waste disposal. Solid waste and scheduled waste are disposed through CEA approved organizations and liquid waste is pre-treated and disposed to the BOI central treatment plant.

S & D Chemicals Pvt Ltd has already achieved Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTs) and is currently working towards achieving Bluesign and Green Screen Standards. S & D currently operates in an Integrated Management System which is guided by ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OSHAS18001 international standards. In addition to the production process, the company has recently contributed in community works in collaboration with the Central Environmental Authority.
